Baby Namings

When your child is born or adopted, you may wish to have an official baby naming ceremony.

This is an indigenous cultural tradition that declares to the world and to spirit who your child is.

During a naming ceremony:

  • Your child is smudged which symbolically removes any negative influences.
  • Additionally, the child is then given a secret name known only to its mother and the celebrant, so that no-one may ever get control over the child by knowing its true name .

Naming Ceremonies

However, naming ceremonies are not just for newborns. A naming ceremony can take place ant any time during an individual's life. Whilst a person is still a child or much older, small or large, reaches a certain age, goes through a change in its life or feels like it needs protection then a naming ceremony may be carried out at any age.

Common reasons for naming ceremonies later in life:

  • Divorce  - with the children or spouse taking on a different name
  • Adoption   - with the children or spouse taking on a different name
  • Remarriage   - with the children or spouse taking on a different name
  • Teen Identity / Comming of Age - in many indigenous cultures, very common in many North American indigenous cultures a person was allowed to claim their own identity by taking another name they felt suited them or that they had to live up to.
  • Change of career. Actors and musicians often change their names or assume another persona for their art
  • Taking life in a new direction. Some people want to completely leave their old life behind and begin afresh with a new name for a new life - this is common in Australian Indigenous tradition by
